Three artists in residence in conversation with two special guests from Rotterdam will discuss the history of the city, its harbour and civic memory. Topics include the changing public image of the port, the responsibility of the artist to the public and the relationship between cultural values and official historical representation.

Marly Weemen (NL) is a city guide. But she prefers the term ‘time travel guide’. She combines her expertise as designer with her knowledge of Rotterdams modern history. In her tours she shows you details you otherwise wouldn’t notice, opens up unexpected locations, tells forgotten stories and shares her personal experience as a resident. Marly organises her own tours with Timeless Rotterdam. She also works as an architectural guide at UrbanGuides and as an exhibition guide at the Kunsthal.
Eva Visser (NL) holds an MA in social history and graduated on the topic of harbour labour relations. She works as researcher and teacher at Creating 010, a research centre that studies new developments in the ‘creative industries’ and is tied to the Willem de Kooning Academy and the School for Communication, Media and Information Technology. She’s a contributor for Puntkomma – the free newspaper on art and culture in Rotterdam – since its came into being in 2013.
Mimi von Moos (CH) living and working in Basel. She works with multiple disciplines including sculpture, video, photography, drawing, writing and performance. Her practice circles around the subject matter of memory and the ways in which the world is understood, individually as well as collectively. Von Moos is concerned with the tangibility of the everyday world, of which she intervenes with site specific installations and/or performances. Since completing her Fine Arts Master degree in 2012 in Basel, she has exhibited frequently in Germany, Switzerland and the USA. For the True Memory Symposium she will present works that have been formed by the engagement around the Rotterdam Euro Port.
Lauren Frances Adams (US) mines the histories of power, labor, and material culture to make surprising connections that resonate with current sociopolitical issues. Solo exhibitions include Back Lane West, Cornwall, UK; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; EXPO Chicago; and Conner Contemporary, Washington, D.C. Group exhibitions include: The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore; Contemporary Applied Arts, London; CUE Foundation, NY; Mattress Factory and the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. Residencies include Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant. Adams is the co-founder of Ortega y Gasset Projects in New York. For the symposium, Lauren will share artworks related to labor and empire in cultural memory and civic monument.
Natalie McIlroy (SCOT) is a visual artist currently based in The Hague. Primarily working out with the studio environment, she is inspired by people, communities, social history and ‘non art’ spaces. Working as an artist in residence in Spain, USA, Scotland and the Netherlands, McIlroy combines intuitive responses with historical ‘truths’. For the True Memory Symposium, she will discuss recent work created in response to the Wilgenstaete building; a high rise, social housing complex that is situated directly across the railway line from Kaus Australis. Built during the post war housing shortage that was deemed ‘public enemy number 1’, Wilgenstaete’s memories will be revealed throughout the evening.Kaus Australis nodigt u uit voor

Het symposium TRUE MEMORY is het afsluitend event van de huidige internationale Artist In Residence gasten van Kaus Australis. Na een werkperiode van 3 maanden hebben de drie kunstenaars een overeenkomst tussen hun werk gevonden; Mimi von Moos (CH), Natalie McIlroy (SCOT) en Lauren Adams (US) houden zich alle drie bezig met de geschiedenis waarin locaties een belangrijke rol spelen. Deze parallel is de aanleiding om onderling, met het publiek en twee speciale gasten in dialoog te gaan. Zo zal de geschiedenis van de stad Rotterdam, de haven en onze maatschappelijke herinnering een centrale rol spelen in het open gesprek.
Het veranderende imago van de haven, de verantwoording van de kunstenaar aan het publiek en de relatie tussen culturele waarden en de officiële historische representatie zijn onderwerpen die aan bod zullen komen. Door hun eigen visie over Rotterdam als locatie binnen een historische en culturele context, zullen de gastsprekers Marly Weemen en Eva Visser dit symposium van verschillende invalshoeken voorzien.
U bent van harte uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan een gesprek met geïnteresseerde mensen in een gezellige sfeer en natuurlijk met lekker eten en drankjes.
Het symposium zal worden gehouden in het Engels.
Eva Visser (NL) is maatschappijhistoricus en studeerde af op de naoorlogse arbeidsverhoudingen in de Rotterdamse haven. Ze werkt als onderzoeker en docent bij kenniscentrum Creating 010 dat onderzoek doet naar (onder meer) nieuwe samenwerkingsvormen in de ‘creatieve industrie’ en verbonden is aan de Willem de Kooning Academie en het Instituut voor Communicatie, Media en Informatietechnologie. Ze schrijft sinds de oprichting in 2013 voor Puntkomma, het gratis krantje over kunst en cultuur in Rotterdam.
Marly Weemen (NL) is stadsgids. Maar ze noemt zichzelf liever ‘tijdreisleider’. Ze combineert haar expertise als ruimtelijk vormgever met haar kennis van Rotterdams moderne geschiedenis. Tijdens haar tours laat ze details zien waar je op andere momenten zomaar aan voorbij zou lopen, ontsluit ze onverwachte locaties, vertelt ze vergeten verhalen en deelt ze haar persoonlijke ervaring als bewoner. Marly organiseert eigen tours onder de titel Timeless Rotterdam. Daarnaast is ze een van de architectuurgidsen van UrbanGuides en werkt ze als rondleider in de Kunsthal.
Mimi von Moos (CH) woont en werkt in Basel. Von Moos werkt met verschillende disciplines, waaronder sculptuur, video, fotografie, tekenen en tekst. In haar praktijk houdt zij zich bezig met het begrip geheugen en de manieren waarop we de wereld verstaan, zowel individueel als collectief. Von Moos houdt zich bezig met de tastbaarheid van de alledaagse wereld, in welke zij intervenieert met site specifieke installaties. In 2012 heeft zij haar MA heeft afgerond in Basel en heeft sindsdien regelmatig geëxposeerd in Duitsland, Zwitserland en de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens het True Memory symposium presenteert zij werk dat is ontstaan vanuit haar interesse in de geschiedenis rondom de bezigheden van de Rotterdamse haven.
Lauren Adams Frances (US) ondermijnd de geschiedenis van macht, arbeid en materiële cultuur tot het maken van verrassende verbanden die resoneren met de huidige sociaal politieke vraagstukken. Solotentoonstellingen zijn onder andere: Back Lane West, Cornwall, UK; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; EXPO Chicago; en Conner Hedendaagse, Washington, DC. En ze heeft onder andere deelgenomen aan groepstentoonstellingen zoals: The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore; Contemporary Applied Arts, Londen; CUE Foundation, NY; Matras Factory en de Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. Residenties omvatten Cité Internationale des Arts in Parijs, Skowhegan School van de schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst, en Joan Mitchell Stichting MFA Grant. Adams is de medeoprichter van Ortega y Gasset Projecten in New York. Voor het symposium zal Lauren werk delen dat draait om arbeid en de heerschappij in onze culturele herinneringen en in het stedelijke monument.
Natalie McIlroy (SCOT) woont en werkt momenteel in Den Haag. Voornamelijk werkend vanuit een studiosituatie is zij geïnspireerd door mensen, gemeenschappen, sociale geschiedenis en ruimtes die in eerst instantie niets te maken hebben met kunst. Als Artist In Residence in Spanje, de VS, Schotland en Nederland combineert zij haar intuïtieve reacties met historische ‘waarheden’. Voor het True Memory Symposium, zal zij recent werk in ontwikkeling bespreken dat gebaseerd is op het uitzicht vanuit haar studio bij Kaus Australis: direct tegenover haar raam ligt aan de spoorlijn het ‘Wilgenstaete’ gebouw. Een flatgebouw, met voornamelijk sociale huisvesting, werd gebouwd tijdens de naoorlogse woningnood. Gedurende de avond zullen de herinneringen van en vanuit de ‘Wilgenstaete’ worden onthuld.
