Join us for this special event of musical and culinary delight on Friday May 22nd at 18.30 hrs, held in the beautiful, hospitable, and unique kitchen of Kaus Australis in Rotterdam.
The Portuguese singer Magda Mendes (Luzazul) and guitarist Ward Veenstra create small oases of tranquility in the city. In places where usually clamor and tumult dominate they play the Fado in a penetrating, delicate way. They are convinced that an authentic setting matches the unpretentiousness of Fado and the fact that it is a musical genre for everyone. Mendes and Veenstra present traditional Fado and their own compositions.
From 17 April to 23 May Mendes & Veenstra are touring 13 locations in all the major neighbourhoods of Rotterdam. For the occasion the locations found are turned into a Fado club for one night: a festive night spot with food and drink, but also a place to give voice to the emotions of life.
Founded in 1985 Kaus Australis is still organized by a collective of artists. Overall objective is to enable the development, practice and public interest in the arts in an international context. In particular, Kaus Australis strives to create an exchange process by realizing guest studios, exhibitions and presentations in its generous industrial space. Local and international artists and curators who wish to work for a certain period in Rotterdam can make use of its facilities.
Chef Barbara van Oo and Artist Karin Suter will prepare a sumptuous three-course dinner. Barbara is well-known for her cooking skills at Restaurant Zinc and ‘La Table de Barbara’, her home restaurant where she cooks every 2 months a 4-course meal with accompanying wines. It’s about enjoying good food with both acquaintances and strangers in a friendly environment. Karin Suter, visual artist with Swiss roots stranded in Rotterdam, is active in the organization of Kaus Australis where she also has her studio . She has been working at Restaurant Zinc preferably preparing delicious dessert creations as well as a hostess with an affinity for exciting wine food combinations, since 2009.
The Menu is fusion of traditional Portugese and modern Dutch cuisine with of course its French and Swiss influences, using mainly local and seasonal ingredients. With it will be served exquisite wines that have been carefully selected to accompany the food.
Both before and after dinner you can enjoy a private tour through the (guest) artist’s studios currently residing at Kaus Australis.

Genieten van live Fado met Magda Mendes, lekker eten en goede wijn in een unieke omgeving, omringt door kunst. Dat is waar het deze avond om draait!
Weest welkom op vrijdag 22 mei om 18.30 uur voor deze speciale gebeurtenis van muzikaal en culinair genot, gehouden in de prachtige, gastvrije en unieke keuken van Kaus Australis te Rotterdam.
De Portugese zangeres Magda Mendes (Luzazul) en gitarist Ward Veenstra (o.a. Nynke Laverman) creëren kleine oases van stilte in de stad. Op plekken waar anders rumoer en tumult overheersen, spelen ze nu de Fado op een indringende, delicate manier. Ze zijn ervan overtuigd dat een authentieke setting past bij het pretentieloze van de Fado en bij het feit dat het een muzieksoort is van en voor iedereen. Mendes en Veenstra presenteren traditionele Fado’s en eigen composities.
Van 17 april tot en met 23 mei toert het duo Mendes/Veenstra langs 13 locaties in alle Rotterdamse wijken. De tournee begint bij Het Fort 1881 in Hoek van Holland.
Voor de gelegenheden worden de locaties voor één avond omgebouwd tot fadoclub: een feestelijke uitgaansgelegenheid waar gegeten en gedronken wordt, maar ook een plek om stem te geven aan de gemoederen van het leven.
Opgericht in 1985 is Kaus Australis nog steeds georganiseerd door een collectief van kunstenaars. Algemene doelstelling is het activeren van de ontwikkeling, beoefening en publieke belangstelling voor beeldende kunst in een internationale context. In het bijzonder tracht Kaus Australis een uitwisselingsproces mogelijk te maken door het realiseren van gastateliers en presentatieruimte. Kunstenaars en tentoonstellingsmakers uit binnen- en buitenland die een periode in Rotterdam wensen te werken staan deze faciliteiten ter beschikking.
Chef Barbara van Oo en kunstenaar Karin Suter bereiden een uitgebreid driegangen diner. Barbara is bekend om haar kookkunsten in Restaurant Zinc en ‘La Table de Barbara’, haar huiskamer restaurant, waar zij elke 2 maanden een 4-gangen diner kookt met bijpassende wijnen. Het gaat over genieten van lekker eten met zowel bekenden en onbekenden in een vriendelijke omgeving. Karin Suter, beeldend kunstenaar met Zwitserse roots gestrand in Rotterdam, is actief in de organisatie van Kaus Australis, waar ze ook haar atelier heeft. Zij is tevens werkzaam in de keuken van Restaurant Zinc waar zij bijvoorkeur heerlijke dessert creaties bereid, en als attente gastvrouw met een affiniteit voor spannende wijn/spijs combinaties.
Het menu is een mix van traditionele Portugese en moderne Nederlandse gerechten met natuurlijk de Franse en Zwitserse invloeden, bereid met vooral lokale en seizoensgebonden ingrediënten. Bij het menu worden zorgvuldig geselecteerde wijnen geschonken.
Zowel vóór als na het diner kunt u genieten van een prive-rondleiding door de studio’s van de (gast) kunstenaars die momenteel bij Kaus Australis verblijven.
